The Kiss Rescue Dogs

From August 2007 to July 2008 a Crook County couple voluntarily surrendered 98 dogs to the Humane
Society shelter, seriously straining the shelter's capacity. None of the dogs were spayed or neutered and they
all needed to be rehabilitated for adoption. The dogs are all working class herding breeds such as Australian
Kelpie, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd and Catahoula Leopard Dog, ranging in age from five months to 14
years. For anyone interested in adopting these special animals, most of these dogs need special allowances of
patience and time to learn how to socialize and to reach their potential of becoming loyal family members.

Discover the Rewards of helping a Kiss Rescue Dog

Not ready to adopt? Too busy to volunteer? You can still make a significant difference for a rescue dog by
sponsoring a Kiss rescue dog today.

Every effort is being made to find loving adoptive homes for the Kiss Rescue dogs. Because of their lack of
socialization they are a little harder to find adoptive homes than the average shelter dog.  The Humane
Society of the Ochocos  is committed to finding the right placement for each Kiss dog. Sponsorship will help
off-set expenses for rehabilitating, caring for and training the rescue dogs. Join us in supporting the Kiss
Rescue effort - sponsor a rescue dog today!

The Story of The Great Kiss

My name is Best Kiss. I was formerly known as John. I am the patriarch and
leader of the Kiss dogs. At one time we numbered well over 100. We ran free.
Then one hot summer day almost two years ago everything we knew was
gone. We were trapped, crammed into small crates and loaded onto trucks. We
said our goodbyes. We all said goodbye. We thought it was the end of our story.

We pulled up to a humble little place we later learned was The Humane Society
of the Ochocos. No one there knew that we were coming. There was no room
for us, but we were not turned away. They found the space.

Some of my family became gravely ill. In spite of great efforts, some of us did
not survive. There were many tears shed by people who hardly knew us and
we felt comforted.

Time has passed and we have learned much about love and trust. Before we
came here we had to fight for everything, but now thanks to this little shelter
we are given what we need and have come to believe that we may have a
future.

I am proud to see my sons and daughters walk out these doors and go to
homes that we never thought we would have. I am proud of this shelter and
that they recognized the greatness in my family and the greatness of their
mission. As a father, I still worry and am bound to keep watch over the 28 of
us who still remain. I worry and watch over this shelter also, for without this
place my family will not survive, nor will the hundreds that will pass through
these doors. I regret the strain my family has put on this shelter, and I am
grateful beyond words for this little shelters "Great Kiss”.

We are the Kiss Dogs. Long may we run!

Cow Dog Up With The Kiss Dog Clan!

In August 2007 the Humane Society of the Ochocos, a small No-Kill
shelter in Central Oregon undertook the rescue of over 100 feral
cattle/ranch dogs. All but 18 have been adopted. The ones that remain
are the blind, the elderly, and the most fearful. Susan and I believe
that there is a home for each and every one of these dogs, however,
in the meantime we depend on the generosity of others to help with
their safe keeping.

Tivi is a 6-year-old Pitbull mix who arrived at our shelter
over a year ago. He was burned and left for dead. He has
shown tremendous grace and dignity. He loves people, soft
blankets and a litte gal named Pearl. If you have a place in
your heart or in your home for him please give us a call.
